Sophie's PlaceSophie’s Place is intended to be a multi-disciplinary, child centred service for children who are victims of abuse. It is to be modeled after the Zebra Child Protection Centre in Edmonton. Starting in February 2012 the first phase of the project with the RCMP will open.

Supporting children 0-12 who are victims of abuse with a new more child friendly approach to investigations of abuse; sadly, also as many of you know, children with special needs are disproportionately victims of child abuse (For more information, please visit  this website.)

Why We Need Your Support

We’ve taken a good hard look this past year at how we can do even more to help children to reach their potential. As you know, The Centre for Child Development helps children with the most complex and severe developmental disabilities across Surrey, Langley, Delta and White Rock.

While The Centre is currently able to help 2,000 children every year, recent population data indicates that as many as 18,000 children aged 0 - 19 in the South Fraser Area have speech, language or hearing disorders. Approximately 12,000 children aged 12 - 19 have participation or activity limitations.

The Centre and the Provincial Government work collaboratively to service more children wherever possible, but despite the best efforts of both parties children are still waiting for care.

Serving More Children in Need: Our goal is to increase the number of children we serve by 200. To do this, we’re seeking $1 million per year from donors, or $5,000 per child per year for pediatric medical rehabilitation therapies.

Programs in Need - $500,000: In order to continue to support existing programs including casting and splinting, recreational therapy, eating skills team and equipment team we rely on the generosity of Centre donors, as each of these programs is integral to multi-disciplinary treatment.

A Building in Need - $$$$:  Originally built in 1974, The Centre’s building on 140th Street is now nearing the end of its useful life. We’ve developed a facility master plan which takes a number of options into consideration. It’s time to build for the future!
